At Sumedha we take a holistic approach to education. While providing our students with an excellent academic programmme, we strive to create well-rounded, well-disciplined and internationally competitive Sri Lankan citizens. This is done through our extensive programme of sports, extra-curricular and character development activities.
We give special attention to English Language and ICT education at Sumedha because, we believe that these skills are essential to succeed in whichever field of study our students choose to pursue. They are provided with state-of-the-art facilities and highly specialized teachers for both these subjects. In our Secondary Section, all subjects except Sinhala, history and aesthetics are taught in the English medium.
Sumedha College has 23 different sports activities and every student is required to participate in at least two different sports. Students have access to facilities such as a swimming pool, a modern indoor stadium and a playground with a 400m running track.Teaching our students the value of staying healthy and physically active through sports is one of our priorities.
We also encourage students to participate in other activities offered by the college such as Scouting, aesthetics events, various clubs and societies, and community service projects to develop their spirit of service to others. Through these activities, we teach our students the importance of empathy and service to society. We also consider it our responsibility to create students who have excellent teamwork skills, interpersonal skills, critical thinking skills and a high level of emotional intelligence.
With the looming dangers of climate change, the Earth which our children will inherit, is bound to have many unforeseen environmental problems. Therefore, it is extremely important that our students learn how to become environmentally-responsible citizens. Sumedha College with its beautiful 9-acres of greenery, has a medicinal-herb garden, an organic vegetable farm, a bio-gas plant and its own waste-water purification plant within the school premises. All these facilities are utilized to educate our students on environmental protection as well as sustainable agriculture.
Through our extensive academic programmes, we guide and prepare our students to achieve their best results at all school and government examinations. But we consider it equally important to teach them to respect our Sri Lankan culture and to live by Buddhist religious values. We teach them the value of personal qualities such as honesty, hard work, perseverance and compassion.
